Watering your foundation in dry months is something you should do no matter where in the country you live. In the City of Austin we find that to be very true. The pockets of clay found around the city really do a number on foundations. Keep that clay moist will help keep your foundation exactly where it was built.
Many people don’t realize that soil expands when it gets wet. Some soils more than others, but adding water to any soil makes it expand. When the weather is dry like it is in Austin the soil tends to deflate. Allowing for homes and building to drop in elevation. This is why watering your foundation is so important.
Watering your Foundation techniques
The most widely regarded best practice for watering your foundation is with a soaker hose. This gives a fairly universal coverage around the foundation. It also allows you to set up a timer and water when you are asleep or not at home. If buying equipment is not your thing, watering your foundation can also be a great activity with a cup of coffee in the morning. You can’t really watch your house grow but you will have peace of mind knowing that your foundation is in one piece.
Things to remember about watering your foundation
More is not always better. Too much water on one side of the house could cause problems. Watering your foundation is all about equal amounts all around the house. I typically start on the side of the house that has my AC condenser. Most people don’t realize that the AC unit puts out about 5 gallons of water a day. This area is going to be well watered. That is why I start with that side. Matching the moisture level all the way around the house keeps me on the level.
